NDIS Plan Management vs Self-Management vs Agency Management: Which Option Suits You?

There are three different ways in which an NDIS participant can manage their funding. The first option is to choose a registered plan manager who will handle payments for you through plan management. The second is self-management, where you, your plan

nominee or a child representative manages your NDIS funding. The third is NDIA management, also known as agency management, where the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) handles your payments.

Each option is different and beneficial in its own way. The choice depends completely on you: how much control you want over your funding and how comfortable you feel managing payments and keeping records.

You can also compare and combine these different management types across support categories. Each option offers a different level of support, responsibility and flexibility.

This guide will help you understand the three types of NDIS plan management, including how each one works and how they differ from one another. The side-by-side comparison and information will help you decide which option best fits your needs and supports.

Quick Answer

The three different ways in which you can manage your NDIS funding are:

  • Plan Management: A registered plan manager manages your funds for you.
  • Self-Management: Your NDIS funding is managed by you, your nominee or a child representative.
  • Agency Management: Also known as NDIA management, this is where the NDIA is responsible for maintaining your financial records and paying your providers.

According to the NDIA Quarterly Report for April to June 2026, "69% of participants used a plan manager for some or all of their funding, while 6% had all their funding managed by the NDIA".

What Are the Three Types of NDIS Plan Management?

The difference between the three types of NDIS plan management centres around a single point: who manages your funding and who pays your providers for their support services. You can either choose an option that fits well according to your needs and flexibility or you can also mix different options across different parts of your plan.

You can choose whichever option that feels right and perfect for you, but always remember to keep an eye on your budget so you know exactly where your funding is going.

At your NDIS plan meeting, your NDIA planner will go through each option with you and talk about which one may suit your situation best. The NDIA will also look at any risks linked to the option you prefer and will discuss with you to make an informed decision.

What Is NDIS Plan Management?

NDIS plan management means a registered plan manager handles provider payments and financial paperwork on your behalf. It's a perfect option for you if you want more freedom when choosing providers but would rather have someone else take care of the

finance invoices, records and payments.

How a Plan Manager Works

A plan manager acts as the financial administrator for the plan-managed part of your NDIS funding. They:

  • Receive and process invoices from your support providers.
  • Pay providers through the NDIS payment system.
  • Keep your invoices, receipts and financial records.
  • Send you monthly statements showing how much you've spent and how much is left.
  • Help you understand your available budget.

You still have the authority to choose your providers, approve invoices and make the decisions about the supports you receive.

  • The NDIA adds separate funding to your plan to pay for a registered plan manager.
  • This funding sits apart from your other NDIS support budgets.
  • Plan management fees don't reduce the money set aside for your approved supports.

Which NDIS Providers Can You Use?

  • You can use both registered and unregistered NDIS providers.
  • Unregistered providers still need to meet NDIS requirements and charge within the NDIS price limits.
  • This gives you a wider choice of providers based on your needs, preferences and location.

How to Find a Plan Manager

  • Search the official NDIS Provider Finder.
  • Ask family, friends or people you trust for recommendations.
  • Do your own online research and compare a few plan managers.
  • Tell your NDIA planner at your plan meeting that you are going for plan-managed funding.

What Is NDIS Self-Management?

NDIS self-management means you, your nominee or your child representative take responsibility of managing your NDIS funding. The NDIS describes self-management as the option with the most flexibility and choice because here it's all in your hands.

How Self-Management Works

  • You organise and pay your providers directly.
  • You keep your own financial records.
  • You make sure every payment and claim matches your approved NDIS plan.
  • You use the my NDIS participant portal or the my NDIS app to make claims, track your budget and check your funding.

Benefits of Self-Management

  • Greater provider choice: You can use registered and unregistered NDIS providers.
  • Flexible pricing: You can negotiate prices with providers, within your funding and the NDIS rules.
  • More control: You decide how to organise and pay for your approved supports.
  • Personalised arrangements: You can directly employ or contract your own support workers

Self-management usually suits people who feel confident with money and don't mind the management side of things.

Responsibilities and Risks

More flexibility also means more responsibility. As a self-managed participant, you need to:

  • Keep accurate invoices, receipts and financial records.
  • Submit correct claims and pay providers on time.
  • Track your spending so your funding lasts for the length of your plan.
  • Spend your funding only on eligible supports that line up with your plan.
  • Check your claims regularly through the my NDIS participant portal or my NDIS app.
  • Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 if you notice an incorrect payment or a suspicious claim.

Some participants can't self-manage because of legal restrictions or identified risks. If this applies to you, the NDIA will talk through its concerns with you.

What Is NDIS Agency Management (NDIA-Managed)?

NDIS agency management means the NDIA pays your providers and keeps your financial records for you. It takes most of the payment duties off your plate. You'll see this option called both "agency-managed" and "NDIA-managed". They mean the same thing.

How Agency Management Works

  • Registered NDIS providers submit claims directly through the NDIS provider portal.
  • The NDIA checks each claim and pays the eligible ones.
  • The NDIA keeps records of your payments and support costs.
  • You still need to watch your funding, review claims and make sure the services you receive match your plan.

Which Providers Can You Use?

  • You can only use registered NDIS providers for NDIA-managed supports.
  • This means fewer choices than with plan management or self-management.
  • You can still pick the registered providers that best suit your preferences and support needs.

Can You Combine Management Types?

Yes. You can use different management types for different parts of your funding. For example, you might self-manage your Core Supports and keep your Capital Supports NDIA-managed.

This lets you take charge of the areas you're comfortable with and get help with the rest. Whatever mix you choose, your funding must be spent on eligible NDIS supports in line with your approved plan.

NDIS Plan Management vs Self-Management vs Agency Management: Side-by-Side Comparison

Whether you're weighing up NDIS plan management vs self-management, or NDIS plan management vs agency management, the main differences come down to provider choice, who pays, and how much paperwork ends up with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plan Managed vs Self Managed NDIS: Which One Is Easier?

Plan management is usually easier day to day, because your plan manager pays invoices and keeps records. Self-management takes more work, but you get more control and can negotiate prices with providers.

Do I Pay for a Plan Manager?

No. The NDIA includes separate funding in your plan for a plan manager when your support budgets are plan-managed. This funding doesn't reduce your other approved support budgets.

Is Agency Management the Same as NDIA-Managed?

Yes. Agency-managed and NDIA-managed are two names for the same option, where the National Disability Insurance Agency pays your providers and keeps your financial records.

Choosing the Option That Works for You

Picking between NDIS plan management, NDIS self-management and NDIS agency management comes down to how much control you want and how much help you would need apart from your support service.

Self-management gives you the most control. Plan management gives you provider choice with someone else handling the paperwork. Agency management keeps payments simple by leaving them to the NDIA. Also, you can always mix and opt for

more than one option across your support needs and ask for a change whenever your needs shift.
